Captain’s List Whites
Drappier, Carte d’Or Brut, Champagne
The Carte d’Or cuvée is the very expression of the Drappier style. With its very high proportion of Pinot Noir, one is almost tasting a Blanc de Noirs. Champagne with a fine aromatic richness, it opens with aromas of stoned fruits such as white vineyard peach. A spicy hint announces a powerful complex palate. A vinous Champagne of lovely complexity with a characteristic note of quince jelly. 135
Davis Family, Sparkling Rosé of Pinot Noir
This Rosé de Noir is crafted from 100% Dutton Ranch Pinot Noir. After a long relationship working with the Dutton family, Guy Davis was able to secure a block of Pinot Noir that comes from an exceptionally cool spot on this already cool vineyard site.137
Stolpman Vineyards, L’Avion Roussanne, Ballard Canyon
Nuanced “red wine drinker’s white wine”, the great tradition of age worthy L’Avion Roussanne. The new release drinks especially fresh and has evolved wonderfully over the year we’ve held it in bottle. What was mineral and oak dominated a year ago has transformed into honey suckle and sweet beeswax. 140
Sea Smoke, Chardonnay, Santa Rita Hills
An elegant Chardonnay with aromas of mango, honeysuckle, fresh cut pear and honeydew. These are complemented by nectarine and a slight nuttiness in the focused mid-palate and the refreshing cool climate acidity of the estate vineyard. 171
Captain’s List Reds
Jax Vineyards, Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
A fruity and well-made Cabernet Sauvignon expressing aromas of dark berries, dried herbs, bay leaves and hints of cola. It’s full-bodied and rich with plush tannins. Generous and opulent with dark berries and chocolate in the finish. 140
Robert Foley, Merlot, Napa Valley
Very ripe aromas of black currant and a trace of cedar introduce the first taste of this 100% varietal Merlot, which floods the middle with expansive ripe black fruit flavors from our Valley Floor vineyards as the gently gripping tannin of our Howell Mountain fruit coats the palate and lingers in a long finish. This “Merlot for Cabernet lovers” gracefully balances the best characteristics of these two remarkable Napa Valley AVAs. 140
Robert Craig, Affinity
Intense, savory and spice notes lend terrific aromatic nuance and vibrancy to play off a core of dark, inky fruit. Deep and dense, but also wonderfully nuanced, the 2018 Affinity has so much to offer. Most of the fruit is from a single site in Coombsville, with small additions from sites in Rutherford and Howell Mountain. 143
Davis Cab 5
The Rockpile AVA is one of the newest in California with an elevation of 800 feet or higher) Rockpile is located at the northwest corner of the Dry Creek Valley. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot were picked, sorted, fermented and barrel aged separately in 100% French oak. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally. The wine is not fined or filtered. 143
O’ Shaughnessy, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
Experience the buzz with the 2019 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, the talk of the valley and beyond. Sourced from our esteemed Mount Veeder, Howell Mountain, and Oakville estate vineyards, this wine boasts a dark blue/black color with flavors of black cherry, plum butter, and mixed berry compote. 155
Scribe, West Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon
The vineyard sits on red volcanic soil on the southeastern facing slope. This cool ripening at 1,600 feet (well above the fog line) produces bright, energetic fruit that is unmistakably mountainside Napa. Notes of juicy black cherry, red currants, and clove dominate the palate. 163
La Torre, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
Sangiovese Grosso from vines in the highest altitude in the Brunello appellation-1500 feet above sea level. Pours a deep ruby red with notes of woodland fruit, fresh berries, and tobacco. A rich deep red that is both balanced and present, made in a classic style that we don’t see much anymore. 165
Robert Foley, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
This Napa Valley Cabernet combines the character of four AVAs. Weathered high-elevation vineyards on Howell Mountain, Atlas Peak, and Mt. Veeder provide intensity of color, higher acidity levels, and spiciness. The lower elevation blocks of Calistoga with rocky soils and more extreme heat summation. Provide the lush mid-palate and fine tannin. Ripe black cherry and rhubarb pie aromas, a thick almost sweet mouth-coating middle give way to the elegant finish. Oak character is well-integrated with the fruit. 167
Robert Craig, Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
Terroir, the French term for a sense of place that establishes a wine’s unique identity, is the perfect concept to describe the qualities of Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignons. Our Spring Mountain Cabernet displays the mountain’s special blue notes – blueberry, boysenberry and exotic plum fruits – that are so distinctive to Cabernets grown on its slopes. We are fortunate to obtain a tiny amount of this exquisite fruit to create a wine with great weight, structure and velvety texture. 171
O’Shaughnessy, Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell. Mountain
Sourced from a single vineyard, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 4% Malbec, 1.5 % Petit Verdot, 1.5 % Saint-Macaire (an obscure grape from southwestern France), 1% Carménère and 1% Cabernet Franc. The nose is all blueberries and bay leaves at first, later developing hints of cassis and sage, all nestled in soft notes of cedar and vanilla, while the full-bodied palate is nicely concentrated and softly tannic, with enough grip to suggest more than a decade of aging potential. 179
O’Shaughnessy, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mount Veeder
This red is youthful, wound-up, and full of tension. Plush, polished tannins add to a weighty mouthfeel filled with deep flavors of cassis and blood orange, with seasonings of sage, herbes de Provence and black and white pepper. A showcase of sophisticated complexity. 218
